When I cleaned out my grandparents’ apartment in 2011, I found a pile of old magazines. It turned out to be a complete collection of a 1950s health magazine. All the issues between 1955 and 1959 were there. The articles were about health, diets and exercise—a very hot subject today as well. But these old magazines wrote about it in a very straightforward, almost blunt, way. Hidden among the collection was an American fashion magazine from May 1960, featuring Dorothea McGowan on the cover. Since grandpa was a sea captain he probably bought this as a gift for grandma.
But what could I do with all these old magazines?
I didn’t want for them to be hidden away and forgotten. Instead I thought it would be nice to get a taste of how people viewed health, diets and exercise in the 50s, and how American fashion looked in the 60s. And I wanted to do it in a fun way, so I started to make placemats, canvas bags, trays and trivets, and I was pleasantly surprised at the result.
